Palestinian Olive Trees

In Palestine, the olive tree is a symbol of freedom and represents a deep connection to the earth it grows on. Olive trees live an average of 2,000 years. Tending to these trees is a generational task passed on over a millennium.

Varieties

Nabali and Souri are the varieties that are found throughout the region.

Nabali

Nabali olive trees are indigenous to Palestine and cultivated according to sustainable agricultural traditions passed down over millennia. The name Nabali refers to the ancient Canaanite city of Napoli known today as the thriving Palestinian city of Nablus. This variety is the mother of the Arbequina olive variety well known in Spain.

The olive is medium in size, the olive oil is smooth and delicate, sweet and fruity.

Souri

The Souri olive tree is similar to the Nabali in structure and size.  It is an ancient variety found throughout Palestine and the region.  The oil made from this olive is robust and has a peppery finish, and also makes a great table olive for pickling.  The tree is hardy and self fertle and somewhat tolerant to frost and coastal conditions.  Considered by many to be the best tasting oil in the region.

How do you care for a Mediterranean olive tree?

Olive trees are very hardy and can withstand a wide range of climate conditions, making them an excellent choice for anyone looking to expand their plant family. While they prefer warm, sunny weather, they can handle some cold temperatures if they are in an area that receives a lot of snow in the winter. Olive trees do best in a Mediterranean-style climate with lots of sunlight and a soil pH of 7.0 or higher. When growing an olive tree, be sure that it receives 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day, and make sure that the soil pH level is above 7.0. Optimal temperatures are between 60 and 90 degrees farenheit during warmer months. In the winter, olive trees should be in 28 degrees or higher temperature, and no less than 20 degrees farenheit to prevent damgae to the tree.
